St. Sebastian School

St. Sebastian’s library is named in honor of Georginne Worman who was the first librarian in the present school building. She served the parish in that capacity for over 25 years. Any and every person who has served as librarian and/or volunteer has carried out her vision.
There have been wonderful additions to our library collection due the generosity of alumni, parents and families of St. Seb’s, teachers and vendors. We try to keep up with the newer and enticing books that students recommend. But there are still the tried and true classics that draw our students into reading.
The previous librarian, Debby Olguin, was a constructive whirlwind determined to reach her goal of revamping the library. She begged and bartered to improve our collection. Due to her enthusiasm and knowledge, she moved the collection into the 21st century. Junie B. Jones, the Magic Tree House series and the Series of Unfortunate Events move off the shelves regularly.
With the gift of vision in the late 90s, Gail Sahagun and Maureen Kostelnik computerized the material. Chris Chance stimulated the curiosity one needed to try new possibilities with the computer program updates. The appearance of the library, with the new shelf units and wooden bins, is largely due to the talents of parishioner Dick Wellenstein. I know that I am not naming many good helpers, volunteers and donors. They do know who they are. We stand on their shoulders.
It was my good fortune to meet other Catholic school librarians at a teachers’ convention. A small group plans an annual in-service for librarians in the five counties surrounding Milwaukee. This in-service day is spent hearing about the newest and best of the books being published, tools to use to preserve the books as we receive them, and other ideas that work best. With the help of the certified librarians in the group, we brainstorm about the best use of space and the quality of the materials.
