In 1992, the St. Sebastian’s Home and School Association began the Readers Are Leaders (RAL) program to encourage and reward our students’ efforts to improve their reading skills. The goal of the program is to promote daily extra-curricular reading.
ROSIE READER
The Rosie Reader program focuses on instilling the love of reading in the K4 and K5 students. Rosie Reader visits the classrooms and encourages children to read. When parents and children read together, the time spent reading is recorded on a tracking sheet. Each tracking sheet represents one letter in the word R-E-A-D-I-N-G. The children earn prizes for each tracking sheet that is turned in, and the child’s name will appear in the school newsletter to congratulate them on their progress. Completion of the final letter results in a book prize.
ACCELERATED READER
This program is for students in 1st through 8th grade.
The process is as follows:
1. The student enrolls in the Accelerated Reader program. Enrollment forms are located in the library.
2. The student reads a book from the Accelerated Reader list. Thousands of books are on the AR quiz list.
3. The student takes a quiz on the content of the book. A student can take a quiz:
a. During available library times during the school day with a library pass.
b. During lunch from 11-1 on Tuesday and Friday.
c. After school for a half hour on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.
d. In the student’s classroom when authorized.
4. A report will be generated containing the quiz results, which will be given to the student. A student earns points for each successful quiz.
5. The student receives awards based on the number of points earned.
S.S. Reader is the student newspaper, which is distributed quarterly. Any student can be a member of the student newspaper or just write a feature article.
