About “100 Years of Sharing a Table”

The 225-page book features a colorful cover, more than 100 recipes and hundreds of black and white photos.

“It’s more than a cookbook. It’s a scrapbook and a window into the kitchens and dining rooms of our community, tying us closer together,” cookbook editor Julie Kennedy says. The book includes old photos of parish and school life, new photographs of ingredients for many of the recipes, personal cooking tips and includes a few favorite recipes from the previous two parish cookbooks. A portion of the proceeds goes to support St. Sebastian Parish.

“Today’s families have less time to cook, so the cookbook is set up for quick scanning. Icons help readers find the recipe that suits their occasion. For example, finding recipes that appeal to young taste buds can be frustrating for parents. The book uses a ‘Kid-approved’ icon next to those recipes that people swear their kids love and think other kids will like, too,” Julie adds.

“The cookbook is a tribute to how food is often the centerpiece for family and parish gatherings and celebrations. The title refers not only to decades of family and community meals, but also to the 100 years of coming together around the altar to share in the Eucharist,” says Fr. Richard Aiken, St. Sebastian pastor.

Kennedy and a team of volunteers spent hundreds of hours reviewing submitted recipes, writing and designing the book.  To generate interest, parishioner and professional baker Katie Utschig created an official 100th Anniversary Cookie recipe. Volunteers baked dozens of cookies and distributed them with the cookie’s recipe card, which also listed instructions for entering their favorite recipes and stories online.

To help guide readers to the level of difficulty they prefer, each recipe is rated easy, average or difficult.  Many recipes tell exactly how long the recipe takes to make, and all have icons guiding readers to those recipes that are vegetarian, gluten-free, good for a group, and other categories.   Instructions are included for ethnic favorites, such as Irish Cream and Potatoes Kugeli; community favorites, such as Winter Farmers Market Breakfast Cheese Cookies and St. Sebastian’s Famous Shrimp Chowder; State Fair prize winners, such as Monkey Bread and Honey Wheat Bread; and many more.

“The simple tradition of sitting together for a meal gives us a sense that we belong; that we are loved.  Whether gathering with hundreds of community members at the St. Sebastian Fish Fry or sitting with family at home, celebrating a holiday or simply filling the belly before soccer practice, the table is a familiar, friendly place where we can celebrate the many blessings God has given us,” Aiken says.
